Courtesy of the respective artists.] «o»Twelve more years to mop up the details of a lost war - President Obama made a surprise visit to Kabul Afghanistan yesterday. No one in Washington knew, but there WERE leaks to the Afghan media which were quashed (except as noted below... the Taliban were told). The president flew into Bagram Military Air Base where he exchanged 30 seconds of greetings with Afghan 'president' Hamid Karzai and then proceeded to a ceremonial signing of a 'memorandum of understanding' that they will work on a long term plan that calls for a western military presence until 2024. More details of the possible long range settlement.

7 killed in Kabul attack just after Obama’s visit
“Insurgent gunmen and bombers struck a guest-house complex frequented by foreigners in the Afghan capital early Wednesday, just hours after President Obama ended a lightning visit. In the attack’s aftermath, several charred bodies could be seen lying in the street, and police reported seven people had been killed.” [In Full @ LA Times]
A firsthand from someone in-theatre, and a critique of the underlying semantic:
Most international guesthouses in Afghanistan meet the UN Minimum Occupational Safety Standards (UN MOSS) but Green Village far exceeds MOSS because its intended clientele is the US Government, not stingy tight wad NGO’s.
Opened in 2008 the place has never stopped growing, always at 100% occupancy it has great food, a decent gym, racquetball courts, a bar, pool, and all sorts of kiosks selling local goods and other stuff.
I don’t care for the place myself because its pre-fabricated, high-end feel combines everything that is wrong about our efforts and confines it in a small, artificially nice place. We have called it menopause manor for years because of the unending stream of reporting, generated by the residents, saying the Taliban is targeting them.
This morning the Taliban were not able to talk their way past the gate guards so they blew their VBIED (Vehicle-Borne IED ie.Car Bomb) on the road at exactly the time when one would expect 200 to 300 school children to be walking by... [babatim @ Free Range International]
Remember folks... As horrible and against-their-own-interest it appears to be, overall, even horrid incidents like this play into the indigenous COUNTER-insurgent's hands because the net effect is for the locals to further isolate themselves from the foreigners leaving the foreigners even more exposed to attack or in bunkers.
Indeed, the West has assuredly lost the war on Afghanistan, it's people, and it's culture.
The people of Afghanistan will dry their eyes, heal their wounds, forgive their neighbors...
But they will NEVER forgive US for being the ONLY ROOT CAUSATION of such horrible things as the caught-in-the-crossfire deaths of Afghan children going to school. Indeed such things would have never occurred without the ISAF's presence.

Also in the news... The push back against police harassment and abuse of legal protests begins.
«o»And locally, where there was nothing much going on, the police were out in force practicing their thuggery against homeless people when they couldn't find enough 'anarchists to molest'. Yours truly was pulled over on his bike by a plain wrapper police car after allegedly not stopping for a stop sign (Wrong! I knew the car was right behind me and DID make a full stop). The car almost hit me as he pulled up next to me. The officers were hostile, and attempted to terrorize me, confuse the issue, but all that resulted after a ten minute traffic stop was an illegitimate stop sign ticket and a bunch of quite hostile words exchanged throughout the stop with yours truly voicing such pithy expressions as "Corrupt" "Thuggy boy" and "I'll see you in court if this ticket ever goes to warrant jackass".
Later the same officers accused a local disabled homeless person in front of at least five witnesses of having pulled a knife on one of them last week in front of the local Starbucks. An absolutely false accusation which completely distressed and terrorized the disabled man. The officer's name is AHLERS, and his Santa Cruz PD badge number is #144 (followed by TA?). His handwriting is atrocious... like a five year old, making it difficult to read.

Are you saying I shouldn't go for that degree in counseling psychology and measure myself and my education by the size of the future paycheck and intensity of competition for (university) seats... Held by GASP! 'FURRINERS!'?
(There's some implicit racism in even mentioning that... Because you MUST KNOW the schools receive LARGER TUITIONS from foreign students. So do tell... Why SHOULD they fill seats with local kids?)
MAYBE the cost of an education in any specific field should be indexed to the career's estimated future income projection. I don't think the people making money off the loan interest, OR the educational institutions would like that but it's a simple equitable solution for the rest of us.
Scientists: Giant cannibal shrimp invasion growing
An invasion of giant cannibal shrimp into America's coastal waters appears to be getting worse.
Researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported Thursday that sightings of the massive Asian tiger shrimp, which can eat their smaller cousins, were 10 times higher in 2011 than in 2010.
“And they are probably even more prevalent than reports suggest, because the more fisherman and other locals become accustomed to seeing them, the less likely they are to report them,” said Pam Fuller, a USGS biologist.
The shrimp, which can grow to 13 inches long, are native to Asian and Australian waters and have been reported in coastal waters from North Carolina to Texas.
They can be consumed by humans.
"They're supposed to be very good. But they can get very large, sorta like lobsters," Fuller said. [More @ CNN]
